ASUS has a full-time environmental health and safety team that is responsible for company-wide environmental security management. The team assesses the environmental impact arose from company''s activities to make sure the company meet environmental regulations and government-related environmental requirements and continues to promote the improvement plan, thereby lowering the environmental impact to the minimum, moving towards "zero-pollution" goal.
The water is used primarily for office. We not only promote the idea of water saving to our employees but also integrate water-saving design into the office design. For example, the water-saving design are as followed:
- Install water-saving facilities on the faucet outlet
- Add more recycling pool and pipelines to collect waste water and use it for toilet water or exterior walls cleaning
- Set up recycling water towers to collect the overflow swimming pool water through pipeline and use it for toilet water
- Increase the waterway facilities and the reuse efficiency of the rainwater and recycled water to and enhance the rate of water reuse
- Increase the temperature when using air conditioner to decrease the loading of the ice water machines, thus reduce the loss of the cooling water
In Taiwan, ASUSTeK sets up independent sewage treatment plants at office building sites. We maintain the system of the sewage treatment plant and perform the quality check of the effluent on a regular basis to ensure the effluent is properly treated and meet the regulation requirements before being emitted into sewage system. The leasing office sites are supervised by the Building Committee. Besides the periodical effluent testing and the system maintenance of the sewage treatment plant, we also hold regular meeting to review and monitor if any non-conformance occurs. The quality check of the effluent met the regulation requirements the whole year.
ASUS'' main sources of waste materials are from R & D processes, waste, packaging, and domestics. By using a strict categorization and management mechanism, we strive to ensure that the wastes in terms of storage, transport, recycling or incineration of landfill on the final environmental impact can be reduced to the minimum, and at the same time improving the ratio of waste recycling and of reuse, reducing the wastes that enter into the incineration or burial process.
ASUSTeK classifies the waste into 2 types: domestic waste and hazardous waste. The figure below shows the total weight of wastes by type in Taiwan in the past few years:
The waste treatments are as followed: incineration for domestic waste, donation for recyclable wastes, physical treatment for hazardous waste. Recyclable wastes were all donated to Tzu Chi charity to benefit more people in need. Some items such as glass fiber, plastic, and metals such as iron, aluminum, gold, silver were proceed by licensed downstream recyclers for reuse purpose.
ASUS sets up "F2-10 Guidelines for Waste Management" and establishes a waste management system that tracks and monitors from the beginning of waste reduction measurement through categorization, the middle of waste scrap flow control, and the post-segment of proper handling of waste. We also conduct audits to waste disposal vendors. These are to ensure that wastes will be properly and legally treated so that the wastes will not cause any harm to the environmental.
ASUS realizes that waste management will become a challenge as we will continue to expand the scale in the future and thus increasing the generation of waste. Besides ensuring the legitimate industrial waste treatment plant, ASUS also actively educates our employees to separate wastes by category in order to enhance the recycling rate and reduce the amount of industrial waste. Through continuing communicating with waste disposal vendors and studying the recycling technology, we expect to see the increase in utilization of recycled waste.
